Film Production Log

On the 16th of January 2010 we started filming for our music video. This was done at one of the locations we had planned to use from the start of the idea, our friend Jack Clegg's house.

We had previously arranged an event on facebook to help ensure we get enough people to come along to make our film seem like an authentic party. Due to this it was highly successful. We managed to get 16 out of the 20 people invited on the event to come. The extent in which the party seems real can be seen in our filming.

We set out to get as much filming done as possible. We managed to film all the way through to the second verse. This meant we are having to arrange another date to film.

This film shoot therefore was successful as it has given us the footage we need to start editing and allowing us to start getting feedback on footage we have. Once the first parts of footage are put together it will give us a sense of where the video is heading and we can find parts that we need to change or develop.

Organising Film Shoot

To help insure we had enough people to film for our video we organised a facbook event. This allowed us to see how many people were available the day we wished to film. This is because having a party scene we need to need to ensure it is as realistic as possible. By seeing how many people were available we could always arrange to invite more people if need be judging on the numbers for the facebook event.

Cast

Here are our two main characters. As you can see they fit with the genre of music with their fashion sense and will appeal to our target audience. Our main character is dressed more appropriately in our video to the indie stereotype as he shall be given the most screen time. The other character is dressed less extravagantly in a plain white t shirt. This will help hide his gender till the end of the video as it is not a gender specific garment.

Inspiration

A huge inspiration for our video will be the sense of voyeurism. I believe this as most music videos have voyeurism as their theme. This can be seen from the screenshots below of 4 different music videos from 4 different genres of music. With this is in mind I believe it would be a great idea for us to portray voyeurism in our music video. This is because it would be following the conventions of music videos and therefore tie it in with existing music videos by following their themes. The sense of voyeurism would work great in our music video due to the narrative we wish to use. If pulled off convincingly it will add to the effect of our narrative and shock viewers with the twist at the end.

As you can see from the screenshots voyeurism can be portrayed in many ways. This is due to the use of the long shot. However, these are used in different ways. For example, in the Nirvana video the voyeuristic view is created by having the band out of focus in the long shot whereas the Lady Gaga video uses a high angle to create a voyeuristic feel.

Production Log

Above is the schedule we wish to use. We shall stick to this schedule closely enabling us to have the most amount of time to edit and do other work like the ancillary tasks to complete them for our final deadline. Following this schedule closely work should be completed at the highest standard as we have allowed time for this.

Feedback on Idea

Once our idea was established within the group and we knew the direction that we had to take we approached our teacher with the idea.

The overall feedback was very good and she was impressed with the interesting narrative we presented to her. Our idea showed promise and we all gained a boost in the fact we believed we could pull off a great convincing music video.

The only issues our teacher raised was our location. This is because to through a party scene it would have to look realistic and not just a group of people in someone's house. With only our friends to use as a cast it will be hard to get enough people in to a club. To get around this we thought that using effective lighting in our friends house we could make a convincing setting.

With this feedback received it has given our group a sense of confidence. We believe that we can pull this project off to a very high standard. This feedback has been useful as issues were raised to prevent us filming and then having to re film due to us not liking the footage we get. This would be down to careful planning which our teacher has highlighted.

Overview of the Whole Video

With Our idea established pretty clearly scene by scene in our head I have decided to post the idea running through the whole video.

During the video there shall be other strange points like the drink being spilt and drawing a question mark in to it. One of these will be a fragment where we see a young child in a closet in focus and in the foreground out of focus people having sex. This adds to the sense of voyeurism which will be created throughout the whole video and giving the audience a hint as to the reason behind our main characters actions potentially leaving the audience believing it is an experience he had when younger.

Development of Initial Idea

With the original idea agreed and seeming promising we had a meeting in order to develop further to create a better pitch for the video. This is because although the idea of the video is good it is not good enough to stand out and get a certain yes to be taken to create.

The first development that was created was by me where i suggest we create an interesting opening scene to go along with the introduction of the song "AA EE OH AA AA EE OH."
Originally the idea was to have our main character miming to this. As a group we decided this was not very exiting and set out to try and improve this opening bit. I came up with the idea that we could do some creative editing here in time to the intro. This would be done by having the main character centralised and have people dancing flashing in and out on each beat. This would be done by filming the opening scene many times with the main character in the same place but each time with different amount of people surrounding him. This would then be edited to not have it simply as more and more people arriving. This would therefore help separate the main character from the rest of the party and help establish how he is not in the right state of mind as the rest of the party.

Another development is the idea of having the main character miming the lyrics during the verse. This would then look like he is having a conversation to the other main character but at the same time it is clear what he is saying linking it to a song and giving the lyrics a personal link to the character. Whilst the main character is miming we shall not show any reactions shots of the other character this is to keep the identity of the person hidden for as long as possible.

Another element we have added into the idea for our video is the use of a montage. Whilst watching music videos we have all noticed a use of montages in a lot of videos. Also we all really like the idea of a montage and believe it will work well in the climax of our video to build up on the feel of adrenaline within the characters.

Initial Idea

The intitial idea is based upon the chorus and electro feel of the song. The setting is at a party incorporating the electro feel to the song helps put an audience in to the scenario of what is a 'normal house party.' The room shall be lighted to help create a more sophisticated party, almost like a club scene helping it move away from a normal house party.

The idea for the narrative of the party is to have 2 main characters (one male and the other unkown) whilst having more people to fill the room making it a convincing party. However, the identities of the other people is irrelevant.

The basis of the narrative is the main male character clearly likes another individual at the party which he wishes to pursue. As the video progresses we see how the relationshop between the main characters develops. In te video there are reference to them having sex. This will be done by seeing them walking upstairs and taking clothes off. However, it is not certain that any activity has taken place. This then enables us to link the video to the music by later showing the main character doubting his actions that have taken place.

As a group we do not intend to have our narrative as a start to end storyline and shall being moving the footage around whilst still having a perfectly clear narrative. This will make the video more interesting to view and can also show the main characters' mental state of regret and doubt.

The camera work shall be heavily influenced by the music especially with the bridge and other electro influences. This shall make our work stand out and not be seen as your average music video.

The narrative shall be tied up in the last scene using the bridge to our advantage and revealing who the other main charatcer's identity is.

I believe this is a great idea as this will clearly appeal to a wide audience within an age range. This is because it involves different situations. For example, homosexuality, alcohol, age, and the name of the song, doubt.
